The White House has twice escaped fire. In 1814 (during the battlefield of 1812), the British set fire to the White House. James Hoban received approval to rebuild the building, and President James Monroe moved out in 1817. Under his presidency, the South Portico or porch was added in 1824, and under Andrew Jackson's presidency, the North Portico or porch was added in 1829.
